Floating islands bring a new type of public park to Copenhagen

Australian architect Marshall Blecher and Danish design and style studio Fokstrot have unveiled programs for a new sort of public house in the heart of Copenhagen — a “parkipelago” of floating islands. Dubbed the Copenhagen Islands, this non-gain initiative follows the accomplishment of CPH-Ø1, the first prototype island that launched in 2018 and was anchored in many parts of the metropolis harbor. Copenhagen Islands programs to start 3 more human-made islands in 2020, with additional planned in the potential.

Mobile, floating and no cost for community use, the Copenhagen Islands notion was established as a way to revitalize the forgotten areas of the city’s previous harbor even though introducing green place for the profit of local citizens, fauna and flora. Like the CPH-Ø1 prototype, which was a 20-sq.-meter timber system with a linden tree at the heart, all Copenhagen Islands will be constructed by hand working with conventional approaches in the boat-developing yards in the city’s south harbor.

The islands will provide as platforms for unique functions ranging from swim zones and floating saunas to gardens and a sail-in cafe. Endemic vegetation, trees and grasses will grow atop the island to supply habitat for birds and bugs, when the house beneath each and every island is suitable for seaweed, fish and mollusks. The islands can be moved seasonally in between underutilized and freshly formulated pieces of the harbor to help catalyze urban growth. In winter season, the islands can be joined together to make a “super continent” for unique activities or festivals.

“The islands reintroduce wilderness and whimsy to the quickly gentrifying harbor and offer you a continuously shifting, generous inexperienced place in the center of the city,” the architects explained. “The project also hints at a new form of weather resilient urbanism, inherently versatile in its use and only applying sustainably sourced and recycled resources.” Copenhagen Islands has obtained the Taipei Worldwide Style and design Awards for Community Place as perfectly as the award for Social Design.
